Plasticine Model Test

Hello again! It's been a long time since I haven't written anything... but this time I have a little reason. As I mentioned in the last post I was about to do a trip alone for a month around Eastern Europe, and that's what I did! It has been an amazing experience and I've met a lot of different people from around the world. I arrived two weeks ago for starting my third year in University, and so far, since I left for the trip, I haven't done anything in 3D modelling yet... but I will soon!

Last week though, it was the birthday of a friend of mine and he bought some plasticine for playing a game (don't think badly, it was just a game about guessing the figures moulded from plasticine). When we ended playing, I decided to try and model a head with that and I really enjoyed it. When I got home, I took some plasticine that I had and started to model a head with it, randomly. This is what I have achieved so far:

Blender Viking Progress 3

Yup! I've been working more on the 'Viking' model these last weeks but I still have lots of work to do. This is a quick render I've done:

Blender Viking Progress 2

Hello!! As always... long time since I haven't written anything, but here I am again! Finally I've finished exams and now I have all July and August to do my things :) I have also finished the 3D course of Blender I was doing, but still I have quite a lot of work to do to finish the viking, such as the beard, the pose, the textures and maybe create a scene for him.

I spend many hours modeling the scales of his armor, and I will spend much more for posing them without distorting so much what I did. Here's a picture of the scales so you can understand how difficult will be to move his arms and keep the structure, as the scales are separated from each other:

I've done a separate rig for the armor but it doesn't move like a unique piece; all the scales get mixed together and are distorted. However, I know this could be done correctly by letting the scales be elastic and connect them all together (not separate pieces as they are now), but it would take much more time and since I don't have to animate the character, this is okay for now!

Here's a quick render of how I have the model:

As you can see, there's still a lot of work to do!! I will try to post soon with more advances.

Demon Sculpt More Pictures

Demon Creature Sculpt Turntable

Hi! I have created a turntable preview of the demon creature model I posted last week.

I've done some retouches, adding more details on his face and distorting a bit its simmetry. However there are still quite a few things I want to polish... such as his backbone and chest. I was planning also to texture him and maybe do the mouth open.

Blender Viking Progress

Hello! As said in the previous post, I was recently chosen for a free tuiton in a 3D cartoon character modeling course organized by Digital Rebel studio (http://digital-rebel.com/index.html) in Barcelona. It is a 4 month course that covers the entire process of creating a cartoon character using Blender, including hair, fur, shaders, UV texturing, render, lighting and composition. The classes are only during the weekend, 4 hours each day. The other day I had to choose the character I will model throughout the course from a few characters drawn by Luis Arizaga (teacher of the course) and I decided to pick this one:

I would have liked to draw a characther myself but I didn't have time to prepare one. However, this will be a very good practice and I'll surely have more time later to do other stuff!

So far I've been doing just the general form of the character, trying to keep a good topology and mantain the basic shapes of the drawing. Next week we'll learn how to render the hair, so by now I've just made the base mesh for the moustache and the beard. Here some pictures:

There is still a lot of work to do... but if I have time this week I'll try to finish some details. Last post I said I was going to do some retopology using 3Dcoat... but finally I decided to work a bit more and do it on my own using the same Blender, with which I think I've gotten a pretty good result!

Blender Course and Demon Sculpt

Hello again! First of all, three weeks ago I got the news that I had been chosen for a free tuiton in a 3D cartoon character modeling course organized by the Digital Rebel studio, in Barcelona. It is a 4 month course that covers the entire process of creating a cartoon character using Blender, including hair, fur, shaders, UV texturing, render, lighting and composition. The classes are on the weekend, 4 hours each day, and this will be my 4th weekend.

So far, we have been familiarizing with Blender and learned some of the hotkeys that allows us to model in a much more effective way. We have also started to model our character from a concept art made by Luis Arizaga, the teacher of the course; we had some different character drawings to choose from and I decided to start a little fat Viking that I thought could be funny to model (I will soon post the drawing and how my model is going).

Moreover, this past week I haven't had classes at the university and I've had time to practice with Blender and Zbrush and gain forces to face the next three months; I will be attending morning and noon classes, the 3D course on the weekends and basketball trainings with my team. It will be surely lots of fun! ;)

Here is what I've been doing with Zbrush:

Darwin and the Evolution Posters Contest

Hello again! This is a contest that was organized by the University of Girona during early 2009 about Darwin and the evolution. The idea was to do a din-A1 poster related to the theory of evolution in groups of four and almost four hundred groups of students participated. From all the groups only three had a prize and we were awarded with the second prize! This is what we did:

It's written in Catalan but the idea is that it is Darwin's last manuscript, the day before he died. He explains briefly his life, his memories and how he got the idea of the evolution of the species. The text is written in a sentimental way and tries to tender the reader while imaging his last days of life, saddened by the death of his wife, tired of writing and ready to die, hopeful that his theory takes effect and is never forgotten.

Playstation Contests

It's been a while since I haven't written anything here, and although I know few people will read this, I wanted to share two of the photomontages I did when I was a bit younger that made me win a Playstation Portable and a bunch of Playstation 3 games.

The first one was done during later 2004 for a contest organized by the official spanish "Playstation 2" magazine. This was about doing a photomontage that had something related with games and the brand new Playstation Portable. There was a total of a hundred of winners and I was lucky I was among them. This is what I did:

The one in the right it's me and you don't have to be very smart to know who won that battle (I am here writing this post).

At that moment I didn't know much more than "cut and paste" in Adobe Photoshop and so if I had to redo it now, probably one of the things I would do is add reflections on the floor and do some better color retouching. However, what saddens me the most every time I see this picture is the fact that I lost all the files I used for the scene... so I can't do any retouching without repeating it all.

The second contest was during summer of 2008, and it was organized by the "Dandel" blog, which no longer exists, and it was about doing a photomontage with the cover of the football game "Fifa 09" that was about to release. This is what I did:

Although I added myself in the first photo and it's been a while between them... NO, this guy is not me! (Sorry if I disappoint you). The idea of "fofo" was because "fofo" in spanish means a person who is "fat" in a more kindly way and its similarity with "Fifa".

This contest had only one winner and many people participated, so I was really excited it was me.

I haven't participated in any more similar contests since then... but as soon as I see one that interests me, I won't hesitate to participate!

ZBrush

I discovered Zbrush thanks to my brother some time ago, in 2005, but it was not until 2007 or so that I did more research and realized I had to learn all those things. As soon as I saw some of the works the great 3D artists were doing with it I fell in love with this amazing tool and all the surrounding world of 3D. I've always loved computers and the world of technology, but also drawing and art... and I realized then, that I could mix these two areas with 3D! Since that time, I've been always tried to follow the news about the amazing world of VFX and to keep an eye on this great program.

Thanks to that, I joined two 3D courses in summer of 2008 and last year 2011, and although these weren't for Zbrush, mainly because I wasn't able to find some good cheap courses, I've learned a lot and they had helped me to understand much more things about how things are done and how powerful this tools can be.

I have lots and lots of tutorials in my computer, not just for Zbrush, also Maya, After Effects, Photoshop, programming... and whenever I have enough courage and time, I like to watch them. I still have so many tutorials to watch but there are also so many things I would love to learn, that some times it is difficult to choose and focus on one of them. Moreover, I have to work on my school projects and do some sport (basketball), so it's not always easy to find time to get to "work".

I could still say that ZBrush is my favorite 3D software and I would like to take much more profit in a near future. This is a project I did just using Zbrush (modeling, texturing and render) during winter of 2009-2010; it was my first work without following any tutorial reference, just proving my imagination, hope you like it:

BOXOUND

This is the application I did for the high school research project (Design and implementation of an interactive sonic system) in 2009-2010. The application is a visual and sonic simulation of the collisions between metal and/or wood objects and the movement of the objects is controlled by the mouse or the keyboard:
